Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has issued a stark warning to interim Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, suggesting that Erik ten Hag recruits Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee “should be nowhere near” the starting XI at Old Trafford.
Michael Carrick, who assumed the helm on a temporary basis following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January 2026, has revitalized the Red Devils, steering them to a perfect record in his first four matches. This impressive run has bolstered their top-four ambitions as they eye a return to the Champions League.
Tim Sherwood, however, has been less than convinced by certain players brought in under the previous management. Speaking to Casinostugan, Sherwood expressed skepticism not just about Ugarte and Zirkzee, but also about Benjamin Sesko’s suitability for the United forward line.
“Is Benjamin Sesko the answer for Manchester United up front? The jury is still out for me,” Sherwood remarked, pointing to the mixed performances seen under Ruben Amorim’s tenure.
Despite the criticism, Sesko has shown glimpses of promise, having netted goals against Burnley and a crucial winner versus Fulham. Sherwood acknowledged Sesko’s potential yet questioned his effectiveness compared to the dynamic Bryan Mbeumo.
“Michael’s got to get it out of him… He just completely changes how United would have to play without the ball,” Sherwood noted, pondering Carrick’s tactical flexibility with Sesko in the squad.
The former Spurs manager concluded that while Sesko may still carve out a role at United, it would likely require adaptation and the right attitude, potentially as an impactful substitute.
In the meantime, Carrick must navigate these challenges as he seeks to solidify Manchester United’s resurgence amid ongoing scrutiny and speculation surrounding certain squad members.
